{"id":53450,"date":"2024-01-05T09:00:35","date_gmt":"2024-01-05T14:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdtimes.com\/?p=53450"},"modified":"2024-01-04T17:02:32","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T22:02:32","slug":"sd-times-open-source-project-of-the-week-developer-productivity-and-happiness-framework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sdtimes.com\/softwaredev\/sd-times-open-source-project-of-the-week-developer-productivity-and-happiness-framework\/","title":{"rendered":"SD Times Open-Source Project of the Week: Developer Productivity and Happiness Framework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn recently announced its decision to open source its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linkedin.github.io\/dph-framework\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developer Productivity and Happiness (DPH) Framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DPH Framework describes \u201cthe systems, processes, metrics, and feedback systems we use to understand our developers and their needs internally at LinkedIn,\u201d Max Kanat-Alexander, principal staff software engineer at LinkedIn, and Grant Jenks, senior staff software engineer at LinkedIn, wrote in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.linkedin.com\/blog\/2023\/practical-magic--improving-productivity-and-happiness-for-softwa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Framework can be adapted by organizations looking to implement systems to improve productivity and developer satisfaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It describes the metrics LinkedIn follows, how it chose what to measure, and provides insights into why some metrics are better than others. For example, some of the metrics in place at LinkedIn include Developer Build Time, which is the time developers wait for their builds to finish; Net User Satisfaction, which measures how happy developers are with the internal tools they are using; and Code Reviewer Response Time, which measures how long it takes to a review to respond to code updates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DPH Framework also recommends creating Developer Personas to better understand developers by categorizing them into groups based on their workflows. This enables leaders to think about the priorities separately for each group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also guidelines for teams who are creating feedback systems, and guidelines for quantitative metrics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the Framework ends with a set of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linkedin.github.io\/dph-framework\/example-metrics.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">example metrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that companies can base theirs on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow more than ever, developers are navigating so much change and new opportunity in this new era of Generative AI, so ensuring teams have the systems, processes, metrics and feedback systems to be successful is paramount.
