According to the research firm, enterprise architecture previously didn\u2019t provide any business value and \u201ccrashed and burned\u201d in 2012 is because organizations were not looking at the bigger picture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite best efforts, many EA programs fall from &#8220;best practices&#8221; to &#8220;worst practices.&#8221; Enterprise architecture and technology innovation leaders must be vigilant and navigate away from practices that sink EA efforts.\u201d Gartner wrote in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursehero.com\/file\/42153861\/avoid-the-13-worst-ea-practices-Gartner-lesson-1pdf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The top 13 worst EA practices a organization can make are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not linking business strategy and targeted business outcomes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusing technical architecture with Enterprise Architecture<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focussing on the current-state architecture first<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive governance and overbearing assurance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a standard for everything<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being engrossed in the art and language of EA instead of business outcomes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strict adherence to EA frameworks and industry reference models<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adopting an \u201civory tower\u201d approach to EA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of continuous communication and feedback<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restricting the EA team to IT resources only<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of key performance metrics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purchasing an EA tool before understand the use cases and critical capabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking that EA is ever done<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saul Brand, senior director analyst at Gartner, points out if businesses look at the Gartner\u2019s top 8 best practices to being successful at EA, governance and assurance doesn\u2019t happen until step six. Thinking of EA as a form of guardrails is a \u201cworst practice\u201d because it makes EA a command and control practice when it should be more of a \u201ccenter of higher knowledge and knowledge sharing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another worst EA practice to point out is when organizations run out and buy a tool first. \u201cThere\u2019s an old saying: \u2018a fool with a tool is still a fool,\u2019\u201d said Brand.
